***AN UPDATED LIST HAS BEEN CREATED. CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE UPDATED LIST OF SCHOOLS.***

I have been researching makeup schools, classes, workshops, etc for the past month (or 7) trying to decide where I want to go that's within my budget. My dream mu school is of course Napoleon Perdis in Hollywood, but that's $2500 that I don't have right now. [Donations gladly accepted! Haha.]

Most reviews say it doesn't really matter which school that you go to, as long as you practice practice practice. [You don't have to go to a mu school, but I want to.]

So here is the list of makeup schools I compiled. Yes it's long, but I think I got all the schools in the Los Angeles area, along with some from the Inland Empire and Orange County. There are also some upcoming makeup workshops at the bottom.

If you have anything to add to this list, tell me in the comments and I'll add it.

[note: I do not know the coursework at these schools and have not had any personal experience with them. If you have any questions about the schools themselves, please contact each school directly.]

  2. No sorry. I haven't heard anything about JLS. I've heard lots of positives about Blasco and MUD though.

  3. Great job putting this list together Linda. It's nice to see all the schools compiled in one place where potential students can click back and forth with ease. Well done!

  4. This helps alot Thx!! Good luck with your mu schooling :)

  5. Hi Linda, I have been looking for a make-up artist school with flexible hours. I wish I could go to Cinema in La. The class I want to take is calloed Master Make-up program which is 11,000 dollars. However, I work in Pasadena full time,so Ruby academy would be my best bet since they are less expensive and close to work with night hours. It's so hard to find the right school. Good luck to you.

  8. People say "u need hands on" GIMMIE A BREAK! I know how to apply makeup well but I want to know MORE. I know there is so much more out there and I need to feel complete in certain areas so I paid $1500+ to go to Last Looks Makeup and it's a week with hands-on training and OMG NOT WORTH THE MONEY! I did not know NOTHING different from what I already knew =/ except stippling...SOOOOOOOOOO I think as long as you learn the ins and outs you will be fine. I was also looking into a makeup course and saw NOMA (NAtional Online Makeup Academy)and it's $349 with a starter kit included <--sure the makeup isn't all that great but it sounds good to me IDK?!? wouldn't hurt to have two certificates and/or diploma =P I also have the GI BILL which I can further go to school in LA would be my future DREAM =D GLUCK

  9. I'm thinking of going to Ruby Makeup Academy...but I'm wondering if anyone has anything good to share with me about it?? Also....I'm kinda wondering what the average makeup artist makes after certificate completion??

    -Nancy

  10. Hi i just recently went to CAMMUA makeup academy and they are amazing!!

    highly recommended!!!

  11. Hi, i need some help! In a couple of weeks i'll be moving to Carlsbad, San Diego i noticed you didn't mention any schools in the San Diego area and I was wondering if you could help me out since I've heard about a couple but not sure how good they are. Have you heard about Bellus Academy? They have 3 or 4 campuses in Southern California and i think they're Makeup program is the same course that they have at MUD and you get the same makeup kit and brushes and so on... but then again i read some bad reviews on yelp.com, any info u have would help me :)

  12. I just moved to so cal a few weeks ago for the same thing.. I heard some good things about studio make up academy and heard its relatively inexpensive compared to other schools. I am still looking into things deciding where to go. I am very interested in seminars and work shops tho, how do u find out about them??

  13. I went to jls makeup school in California in. What an awful experience. And I also went to Joe Blasco in Orlando florida. If you have any questions for me let me know. I figured I wouldn't talk about my experience till some one was actually interested.

  14. JLS Makeup was a very professional school. I even booked a music video from JLS. I would reccommend it to any artist trying to go to the next level. Portfolio pics turned out amazing!!!

  15. this is great! thanks so much for compiling this list! it's so helpful!=]

  16. I went to JLS Makeup School and had an amazing experience. Instructors at JLS Makeup School are friendly. The kit had Kroylan and MAC products. The airbrush is cool.We had a photoshoot the last two days and pics turned out really good.

  18. My Nieces mother just graduated from the Ruby Makeup Academy in Upland, she loved it. Its funny because I started looking for a school to go to and found Ruby and its was super close, I didnt even know my nieces mother went there until I walked in and saw the pic of the graduating class and there she was. I signed up and I begin classes June 30th. So far everyone seems really nice! This was in response to NANCY'S POST, I hope that helped a little.

  21. I took the JLS advanced professional make up course in New York and it was well worth the money! A few weeks after graduation, I landed a job on Broadway for a hit play! As a result of that experience, I have been able to get many lucrative gigs in both So. Cal and NY. I highly recommend taking one of the courses - you won't regret it.

  22. Good blog: You should start many more. I love all the info provided. I will stay tuned:)

  23. Hi, I'd like to invite you to post your giveaways on our giveaway directory: Giveaway Scout (http://www.giveawayscout.com). Please submit your blog here: http://www.giveawayscout.com/addblog/ and once you receive our confirmation email you can post as many giveaways as you want. thanks, Josh

  24. Hello all artists!! I agree with most of you that these schools are waaaay to expensive and not really worth it. That's why I quit teaching at one of the Hollywood Schools, and opened my own small studio!! I only except 2 students per session, and since I wrote the curriculum for the big school, you will learn everything you would for the BIG $$...

I have over 19 years experience and still work in the industry. If you are serious about becoming a makeup artist, contact me. Not only will you learn all the artistry skills needed, I will actually teach you how to run your own business and connect you with the people you need to know to be successful.

  27. Hi, I actually went to jls also in 2003 and it sucked! The instructor there didn't teach anything I already knew..:( the case they gave it's nice and big but the makeup in there sucked, it had no brand or expired, it wasn't Mac like that one girl said... Yes the teacher was nice can't complain about that but that's not what I payed all that money for, oh, also to top it of one of the models I got wad Sooo picky, the thing was that I needed to do what I wanted her to look like.. Well I got my certificate:) but I wished I would have gotten more knowledge:P

  28. Thank you so much for compiling this list - I'm looking to take some classes, and this is a great starting place. thank you thank you thank you!

  29. Thank you all for your inquiries about my private makeup school. For those of you that want more info about it, check out www.beautifuloutlook.com, and you can see me teach on www.youtube.com/beautybuzz90210

Don't let those big schools fool you! You don't need to spend thousands of dollars to learn all you need to know to be successful as a makeup artist.

  30. Hi Linda, This is a fantastic list of really useful info. I am also researching a makeup school to attend. I am curious what attracts you to Neop Perdis school as opposed to say Award Studio? That is what I was leaning toward before I found your page. Thanks!

  31. Great list but you left off Melissa McNamara. Beautiful Outlook in Studio City - Beautifuloutlook.com http://www.youtube.com/user/BeautyBuzz90210/videos

  32. So where di you end up going? I would like to hear about your experience.

  33. Just a couple you might have looked over or not seen that are some great options: Downey adult school has a 15 week program covering everything for bout 3000$. Also Fullerton College has a semester class in the theater stage makeup/character for roughly 35$ a unit?...prices fluctuate. And also just a FYI I went to Rio Hondo last summer for their makeup class...didn't learn anything, highly disappointed with this class, so I don't recommend it. Thanks for all the other ones you posted! I'm still trying to decided between Downey AS, FJC or Cerritos. Also, I checked out Cinema in LA, the location is kind of hectic and it's majorly over-priced...unless money is no issue. Good Luck! <3 -Michelle

  34. Hands down MUD.

  35. Any body know how much Ruby academy is?

  36. Cool school.I learned a lot and got a job with Mac after I graduated.

  39. has anyone tried pro Studio Makeup Academy In la Habra? I've seen that they are very inexpensive ! and ive seen on Facebook some of the students work and it looks pretty good!! ( https://www.facebook.com/ProStudioMakeupAcademy?ref=hl ) thats the facebook page and their website is www.Mystudiocosmetics.com

  42. I'm undecided between 2 schools... Ruby academy and Apri love pro makeup studio ... I actually didn't see April Love Pro in your list of schools ... can someone give me some info PLEASE!!!

  43. Hello Aspiring Makeup Artists!! Melissa McNamara here with Beautiful Outlook private makeup school. I just had a cancellation for November, and am willing to give this spot to someone deserving at a VERY discounted rate...

  45. Thank you for sharing this! My wife is staring makeup school in Toronto next fall, and she is trying to decide which school to go to. I will have to tell her about your comparisons!

  46. Useful information ..I am very happy to read this article..thanks for giving us this useful information.Fantastic walk-through. I appreciate this post.

  47. My sister is pursuing a career to become a mobile makeup artist and she is looking for some schools or classes to go to. Thanks for listing a lot of places that she can consider. I am going to forward this posting to her.

  48. Great job putting up link list is not a easy task, i appreciate it. Check out makeup schools in orlando will be a great help to you

  49. Do not waste your time or money on award studio. Amy ward is a scam artist. She is a liar and unethical business woman. She promises a week long education and portfolio of 60 images of your work with real models and actors... It's all a lie! The photos I received are amateur from the models to the lighting, editing, angels etc! Spend your money on something that actually gives you an education!

  50. I just graduate from a University for my Bachelors, and now I'm pursuing my passion. I went to ruby and the price is about $3k with supplies and everything included and an 11 week course. I'm about to check out Lebec Makeup Atelier. I'm a bit surprised that My Beauty Mark Maekup Academy is not even listed. I was there a few weeks ago to check out the school, and it's not bad. Price is about $2600 with supplies included and the course is longer about 5-6 months. I'm waiting for Cammua Makeup to get back to me. I'm just very undecided on why school to attend. I love make up with a passion, and I'm a bit surpirsed the tuition is like a semester at a University.
